Glossary of terms
We have tried to keep technical terms to a minimum in the guide, but have found the following terms indispensable.
- ascender:
- the part of a lower case letter going above the usual height, such as in b or d.
- chamber:
- the circle in letters such as b, d, or p.
- cross-stroke:
- the horizontal line on f and t.
- descender:
- the part of a lower case letter going below the usual height, such as in j or p.
- minim:
- the basic stroke for the letters i, m, n, and u.
- stem:
- the straight vertical line in letters such as b, d, or p.
