Handwriting Problems

The following are various examples of problems present in Alexander Carmichael's handwriting style and the recording medium (paper, ink etc.), which present challenges to the researcher. These include cross-writing and staining. An 'unproblematic' example is also included for comparison.

  1. Overwriting
  2. Drops from blackhouse roof leaving peat stains
  3. Writing at speed in pencil
  4. Relatively legible: probably a later transcription
